Kubba

Kubba, is a lovely dish most famously made in Mosul, it consists of to circular paddies of minced wheat stuck together like a pie and between them minced meat with raisins and almonds, it is then either boiled in brine or fried.

Two days ago, a Kubba factory was raided by MoI Comando’s, all (27)? Workers in the factory were “taken away”. When the people in the neighborhood called the damn (130) anti terrorism number, the operator told them “we do not have any operations in your neighborhood”.
Some of the people DID recognize some of those commandos and a riot started in Durra area were those apprehended families belong to.

The Minister of Interior issued the order to arrest the commander of the 8th Commando battalion and his assistant for interrogation.

Seven of those young men’s bodies were found in a dump site yesterday morning.

I became curious when I read your post about Kubba so I looked up a recipe. I'm vegetarian so I will use some sort of fake meat instead of the lamb. I wonder if it is possible to find the Basra black lime here in Sweden though. Does it taste very different from the ordinary green lime?
Here is the recipe I found, if anyone else happens to be curious. Maybe someone has a better one?

Kubba (minced rice & meat patties)

Ingredients:
300g lamb minced
1 onion, finely diced
2 tbspns parsely, finely chopped
1 tbspn sultanas
2 tspns peas
1 tspn cumin
1 tspn turmeric
1 tspn ground Basra (black) limes

2 cups rice
2 saffron strands
handful fine breadcrumbs

oil for frying

Method:
First make a mince stuffing by frying lamb mince with onion. When the meat is cooked, add parsley, sultanas and peas, and spice with cumin and turmeric and a little ground lime powder. Once the cooking liquids have disappeared,
season to taste. The mixture must be quite dry and fragrant.

Cook long-grain rice (preferably basmati) with saffron or turmeric until well done. Mash with a handful or two of breadcrumbs to achieve a soft paste. With a palmful of rice mixture, form a flat disc, place a teaspoon or
two of meat mixture in the centre and fold the rice paste over it (Amera makes small saucer shapes and oval, mini-torpedo shapes). Deep fry in vegetable or olive oil until golden.

Ok ... We are way way past
the stage of needing some major
positive event to happen in order
to end the sectarian violence in Iraq ... I am going to propose the following and Iraqi who know better then others can respond ...

1) Does Saddam still have influence over his portion of the insurgency or has the insurgency moved past Saddam ???

2) if Saddam still has influence
I believe new Iraqi government
should ... in exchange for
life in prison for him and say
the others on trial
(instead of death by hanging in Firdos square )
Have Saddam on International
and especially of course Iraqi
TV Stand before the Iraqi people admit his crimes, his atrocities ... ask forgiveness
from those he opressed and killed

Issue this apology to the Iraqi people in front of Sistani and al-Sadr
and other influential Shia and Sunni clerics and Call for an immediate end to all killing in order to save the country,
call for a unified Iraq, oil sharing, mutual respect, celebration
of Shia Holidays etc ...

3) I of course am an ignorant American ... but its clear
no one is really in charge of
Sunni part of insurgency in totality. I beleive though
beig a stupid American Saddam
still has a greater influence
over former regime members
then anyone else ...
If unification and ending the insurgency comes from his lips
it may mean something !!!

In addition Saddam and his inner circle are not hardened military people ... they are lazy fat spoiled people who were used to living well in Iraq and as such I believe they fear death by hanging very much.

4) So
a) Would Saddam do it ???
b) Would his insurgents obey
c) Would this be enough for
Shia majority ...
To see Saddam humbled,
admitting atrocities,
asking for forgiveness
from someone like Sistani.

5) The fact is 10,000
insurgents with expolsives
can drag the killing out
for 20 years

Some huge political movement
needs to come soon

Anonymous,
With all due respect but your problem that you have all your suggestions based on media which is quite misleading.
The problem here is not only the insurgency but the government itself which is involved in allowing all the killing.

Saddam would ask for forgiveness!! That is funny. The issue is much bigger than that and he is not a president who sexually harassed a female employee in his palace to apologize for it. Iraq is not the STATES.

I personally think Bush should beg on his knees asking for the American people's forgiveness, should be on your national Tv and for 24/7 for the rest of his life for all the abusing he did to your people before the killing he caused in here and other countries.

In less than a month there were more than 1000 bodies in Baghdad alone.

We are a country with no government. The people who are called government are just lousy sharks whose their biggest worry is how to get their bums fatter .. oh and busy inventing new ways of how to suck up for the American government. Has anyone seen how our “Honorable” president kissed 8ondareas Rice??? That was embarrassing for God’s sakeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Miraj ....

Ok you are probably an Iraq who
knows better ... but
this "we never killed each other
like this before... "

Is BullShit Saddam certainly
killed Iraq before ... the only reason you see the horror now
is because BOTH sides have arms
and explosives ... the battle is even ...and even battles drag on
for a long time.

In Saddams day his power was absolute so any uprising no matter how small was immediately handled
Isn't he on trial for "collective punishment because of uprisings
???

Iraqi extremist are killing each other in the open now because
of the balance in weapons and
explosives

If the new Government is behind most of the killings then it is behaving similar to Saddams government except its security systems are not as strong and complete ... however over time they may be and you will see
rule by force by the Shia majority.

Bush did not rule America for 35
years and kill between 300,000
and 1 million American citizens

Bush had the US military involved
in two missions leading to
3000 Soldiers deaths and approx
10,000 with severe wounds ...
The results of these two missions will be clear in say two years.

But both missions enabled United
Nations Sanctioned nation wide elections to occur and governments
which are way way more representative of the people emerge ... its the extremist elements in Afghanistan and Iraq
That have perpetuated the violence ...

If Maliki has turned death squads loose its because of the horrific
violence clearly directed toward
Shia civilians for about 6 months
during which Sistani called for restraint ... the Sammarra shrine bombing ended the calls for restraint.

Any comparison between Bush and Saddam is absurd in terms of the pain caused to their respective
countries

The simple fact is No current insurgent leader can stop the insurgency in Iraq

Maliki may be able to stop the death squads operated by Shia militias ...
Malaki needs a voice
of influence on the opposite side to call for the end of the violence ... perhaps it should
be Saddam !!!

gI have lived 26 years here in Iraq. If all Iraqis are killing each other then how come I do not see myself, my family and/or my friends killing each other?

Saddam killed his people and abused us for long years but he used to suck up for other Arab countries while your administration was good in attacking other countries rather than its own. I do not find huge difference between the two. You think that it is quite ok for your country to attack and kill children and women of other countries but not ok for other countries to do so to themselves.
The victims are still the people themselves who you would never ever imagine one second of their suffering. Still you ‘re quite defensive when someone talks bad about your lousy administration. It might be not lousy for you , yeah I can understand that… However it is a criminal one for the rest of us, the countries that were attacked by your government.

Saddam was an American agent who was planted in the middle east, he accomplished his mission successfully. The jackass believed the joke and thought he was a hero, a hero made by another foreign nation. He attacked Kuwait and there you go. Your administration applied a 15 years of sanctions.. Were they imposed on Saddam? No!! The sanctions were the Iraqi people. 15 years of all kind of sanctions from food to the most simple things you need in your daily life, like for example the pencils which our kids used at schools.
15 years gap between us and the world, 15 years of ignorance for the sanctions were educational as well. I lived through all that and we did not kill each other.
I was free to in the street and my family used to walk free in the street not fearing someone would kill us for money, for religion for what ever shit.
The sanctions along with all what we’ve be thru with Saddam made the weak Iraqis go to religion for shelter and now that was the game. Empty brains in the wrong hands.
What do you think?
You have opened the doors for all the terrorists. If you do so to your states, the same thing will happen and even more.
Your people went killing and raping each other because of Katrina let alone a war for more than 35 years!! Your people still have mental problems since the two powers fell down and you want us to act normal after all this. Get real!!!!!!!!!! What ever you feel is ok but is a taboo on other nations. Stop seeing yourselves and superiors and start thinking as human beings.

How come when a disgusting American soldier rapes an Iraqi female you justify for him by being ohhh poor soldier he was under stress and that kind of bullshit while the animal was under stress for 3 years MAXIMUM no more ,no less.
